about

There are some great longer versions of this song (some go to 16 verses!) but we've stuck with an edited down one which we think still tells the classic unrequited love story. Most versions seem to come from Scotland, although there are some from England and Ireland, and published copies date back to the 1600s.

lyrics

I Once Loved A Lass – English/Scottish Traditional (Guitar CAPO 2)

D G
I once loved a lass and I loved her so well
D C A
I hated all others who spoke of her ill
D G D Am
But now she's re-warded me well for my love
C G D
For she's gone to be wed to another
C G D
For she's gone to be wed to another

I watched as my love did to the church go
With bride and bride-maidens she made a fine show
And I followed her on with a heart full of woe
To see my love be wed to another
To see my love be wed to another

The parson who married them aloud he did cry
All that forbid it I'd have you draw nigh
Thought I to myself I'd have a good reason why
Though I had not the heart to forbid it
Though I had not the heart to forbid it

I watched as my love did sit down to dine
I sat down beside her and poured out the wine
And I drank to the wee lass that should have been mine
For now she is wed to another
For now she is wed to another

I once loved a lass and I loved her so well
I hated all others who spoke of her ill
But now she's re-warded me well for my love
For she's gone and is wed to another
For she's gone and is wed to another
